Measuring Tools in Sri Lanka

Measuring tools decide whether everything downstream fits. This range runs from long steel and fibreglass measuring tapes up to 100 metres, through pocket steel tapes, magnetic spirit levels in lengths from short torpedo sizes up to 1200mm, steel squares, try and combination squares, adjustable T-squares, multi-purpose triangle squares, long stainless steel rules, chalk lines and plumb bobs, and on to precision instruments — vernier calipers, dial calipers and micrometers.

There are really two families here, and they serve different trades. Site measuring is about distance and level: masons setting out a foundation, carpenters marking a cut, tilers checking a plane, electricians running a straight conduit. A magnetic level is worth the small extra on steel work because it holds itself in place and gives you both hands back. Long tapes are the ones that get abused most, so wind them in cleanly rather than dragging them through grit.

Precision measuring is a different world. Vernier and dial calipers read to hundredths of a millimetre and are what a machine shop, an engineering workshop or a mechanic uses to check a shaft, a bore, a brake disc or a bearing seat. Micrometers go finer still over a short range. These are instruments rather than tools — dropping one is usually the end of its accuracy, and they belong back in their case rather than loose in a drawer among spanners.

Masons, carpenters, tilers, fabricators, machinists, mechanics, surveying assistants and quality inspectors all buy from this range, as do hardware retailers stocking tapes and levels as everyday sellers.

One habit worth having: check a new square against a known straight edge before you trust it on an expensive piece of timber, and store levels flat rather than standing on end where they can take a knock.
