There is something about this particular set worth pointing out, because it is not obvious from the numbers and it decides whether the set suits your work. The sizes are quoted in millimetres — 0.051, 0.076, 0.102, 0.127 and so on — but look at them closely and they are exact conversions of imperial sizes. 0.051mm is two thousandths of an inch, 0.076mm is three, 0.102mm is four, 0.127mm is five, 0.635mm is twenty-five. This is an imperial feeler set expressed in metric units.

That makes it the right set for older engines, British and American machinery, imported plant and any equipment whose manual quotes clearances in thousandths of an inch — which in Sri Lanka covers a great deal of what is still running. If your work is on modern engines with clearances specified in round metric figures, the 32-blade set in this range gives you 0.04, 0.05, 0.06mm and so on directly, and is the better match. Neither is superior; they suit different manuals.

The blades are 65Mn, surface polished. 65Mn is a high carbon manganese spring steel, and spring steel is essential here: a feeler blade is bent, slid into tight gaps and flexed constantly, and it has to return dead flat every time. A blade that has taken a permanent set no longer measures what it says it does. A gauge sheet is included.

Three habits. Use the feel, not force — the correct blade should slide in with slight drag, and a blade pushed in hard is telling you the gap is smaller than the blade. Combine blades to make intermediate sizes, which is what the set is designed for. And wipe the blades with an oily rag before folding them away, since these are thin carbon steel and rust both thickens a blade and makes it unreadable.
