Two squares, and between them they cover the marking and checking that a woodworking bench needs: a 10 inch aluminium try square and a 12 inch combination square.
Buying them together makes sense because they do genuinely different jobs and most people need both. A try square is a fixed, permanent right angle — nothing to set, nothing to slip, and that is its virtue. When you want to know whether a corner is square, or to mark a crosscut line, a fixed square gives an answer that cannot have been knocked out of adjustment mid-job. It is the reference.
A combination square is the versatile one. Its head slides along a graduated rule and locks anywhere, which turns it into several tools: a square, a 45 degree mitre gauge, a depth gauge for recesses, a marking gauge for scribing a line parallel to an edge, a height gauge, and — with the head off — a plain steel rule. Most combination squares also carry a small spirit vial. It does more, at the cost of having a setting that can move.
Used together the way a bench actually works, the try square checks and the combination square sets out. Anybody equipping a first workshop tends to buy one or the other and then discover within a week that they wanted the second.
The try square is aluminium — light, rust-free, and stable. The combination square gives 300mm of graduated rule.
The buyers are carpenters and joiners, cabinet and furniture makers, shopfitters, technical training workshops, households setting up a bench, and hardware dealers, who sell square sets readily because they solve the choice for the customer.
Check both on arrival with the flip test, and again after any drop. Hold the stock against a known straight edge, scribe a line along the blade, then turn the tool over onto the same edge at the same point and scribe again. If the square is true the lines coincide exactly; if not they diverge by twice the error.
That check matters because of how a bad square fails: it does not look wrong or feel wrong, it simply makes every piece in a job wrong by the same amount in the same direction, and the error surfaces at assembly when the parts refuse to close up. Ask on WhatsApp for a price on the set.
