A metre steel rule is the reference against which other things get measured, and there is a reason workshops keep one even in a world of tape measures.

A tape blade is curved across its section, coils, and has a hook on the end that slides. Every one of those is a small compromise. A steel rule is dead flat, perfectly rigid, has a true edge along its whole length and has no moving parts at all, so it does two things a tape cannot. It is a straightedge — laid against a surface it shows you daylight under any hollow, which is how you check a board, a joint face or a machined surface for flatness. And it measures without any of a tape's small uncertainties, which is why it is what you reach for when the dimension has to be right rather than approximately right.

At 1000mm it covers most bench and joinery work: marking out sheet material, checking and marking timber, laying out metalwork, and serving as a cutting guide for a knife.

Stainless steel is the specification, and it is the right one for a rule that will be used for decades. A rule is thin and its usefulness depends entirely on its edge staying straight and its graduations staying readable — rust does both kinds of damage at once, pitting the edge and obscuring the numbers. Stainless removes the problem, which matters in this climate and in any workshop where the rule gets handled with damp or oily hands.
