Spirit level with magnetic (1200)

The principle is worth stating once more because it decides everything about choosing a level. A level reports only the surface under its own length. Step a short level along a long run and each segment comes out level while the run as a whole rises or falls, because the tool physically cannot see between its own ends — and the short level's own tolerance is added at every step. A 1200mm level takes in far more surface in one reading and is much harder to fool with a local high spot. For anything that must be true across a distance, length is the accuracy.

The published figure is 0.5mm per metre, which at 1200mm is six tenths of a millimetre across the level's own span.

The frame is heavy duty aluminium at 1.5mm wall thickness, and that specification matters most at this length. A 1200mm level is a beam carrying its own weight, and a thin-walled one sags in the middle and flexes when pressed against a wall — reporting its own bend as the surface. That is the mechanism by which a long cheap level can be less accurate than a short good one, and 1.5mm of wall is what prevents it.

Three vials give 90, 180 and 45 degrees, with anti-shock end caps to absorb the impact when a long level falls on an end, which is how they are almost always damaged. It is magnetic for holding onto steel.

Two habits. Check it end for end before any job that matters and after any drop — read a surface, reverse it in the same place, and the bubble must read the same. And store and carry it flat or hanging, never leaning in a corner: a 1200mm level falling onto a concrete floor is the single commonest way a good one is quietly ruined.
