Beyond marking, a 1500mm rule is a long straightedge, and that is arguably its more valuable role. Laid against a surface it reveals any hollow or hump as daylight underneath, which is how you check a door, a worktop, a joint face, a bench top or a machined surface for flatness over a real distance. Nothing else in a workshop does that as simply, and a tape measure cannot do it at all.

It also serves as a cutting guide for a knife along a full sheet, and as a reference edge for setting up machinery.

Stainless steel is what makes it last. The whole value of a rule is in a straight edge and readable graduations, and rust attacks both — pitting the edge and obscuring the numbers. In this climate, and in any workshop where tools are handled with damp or oily hands, stainless is the difference between a rule that is still a reference in twenty years and one that is a rough guide in five.

Three habits, all more important at this length. Measure from a graduation rather than from the end where possible, since ends get knocked and a worn end reads short from exactly where people start. Never use it as a lever, a prybar or a scraper — a 1500mm rule is easy to bend and a bent rule is finished as a straightedge even if the graduations are perfect. And store it hanging or lying flat, never leaning in a corner or buried in a drawer under heavy tools, because a long thin rule takes a permanent set very easily and you will not notice until a cut goes wrong.
