This is the 400x600mm framing square in medium carbon steel with embossed graduation, and both of those differ from the other large square in this range — so it is worth setting out which suits which work.
Embossed graduation means the markings are formed into the metal rather than printed on top of it. They cannot wear away, be scrubbed off when the tool is cleaned, or be dissolved by oil and solvent. That matters because of how squares are used: slid across timber, gripped in the same places, wiped down, and handled every working day. A printed scale disappears first in exactly the spots you use most, and a square whose numbers have gone is a square you stop trusting. Embossed markings are still there in twenty years. The counterpart is that fine embossed lines are harder to read in poor light than bold printed ones on a coloured ground — which is the argument for the powder-coated printed square in this range if your work is outdoors and rough.
Medium carbon steel is a genuine structural material for a square this size, giving the stiffness a 600mm arm needs. That stiffness is not optional: a large square that flexes when you press it against work or lift it by one arm has stopped reporting a right angle. The honest trade against stainless is that carbon steel will rust if it is left wet, so it wants wiping and a light oil if it lives in a damp store.
At 400x600 it is a framing and setting-out square: laying out studs, joists and rafters, marking sheet material, squaring formwork and large assemblies, and checking structural work over a distance where a bench square cannot see the error at all.
The buyers are carpenters and framing joiners, formwork and shuttering carpenters, roofing carpenters, building contractors, steel and timber frame erectors, and hardware dealers supplying construction.
Check it with the flip test before you rely on it and after any drop: one arm against a known straight edge, scribe along the other, turn the square over onto the same edge at the same point, scribe again. The lines coincide if it is true and diverge by twice the error if it is not — a very sensitive check on a square this large.
Store it hanging flat, keep it lightly oiled, and never use it as a lever or a prybar. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
