Measuring Tape (3.0mx16mm)

The blade is 16mm wide and 0.12mm thick, in 65Mn spring steel. Both numbers do real work. 65Mn is a manganese spring steel — it is what gives the blade the springiness to stand out unsupported when you extend it across a gap, and the memory to return flat rather than staying kinked. The 0.12mm thickness is the trade-off point: thicker blades stand out further but are heavier and crack sooner at the hook; thinner ones flop. For a 3m tape this is the right side of that compromise, and it will reach across a doorway on its own while you mark the far end.

The case is high-impact ABS. Tapes get dropped, constantly, usually onto concrete from waist height, and the case is what fails. ABS absorbs that better than the brittle plastics used on giveaway tapes, which crack across the lug and let the spring out.

The rewind spring is heat-treated, and this is the part that decides whether you still like the tape in a year. An untreated spring loses tension, and a tape that will not pull itself back in is a tape that stays in the drawer. Heat treatment keeps the return firm and the retraction smooth rather than snatchy — which also saves the hook, since a tape that slams home at full speed batters its own end rivet.

There is a strong belt clip, which sounds trivial and is not: the clip is the reason the tape is on you rather than on the other side of the site.

Carpenters, masons, tilers and shopfitters use a 3m tape all day. Electricians and plumbers use it for setting out boxes, brackets and pipe centres. Vehicle body shops and fabricators keep them for marking stock. And it is one of the highest-turnover items a hardware shop carries — a tape is a consumable in practice, lost or broken rather than worn out, which is why these come 120 to a carton.
