The reason is that it reads a useful length of surface without becoming unwieldy. A level only reports what lies under its own length, so a short level checks a short segment and misses the dips between; 600mm spans enough to catch the local unevenness that matters on door frames, window openings, cabinet and appliance installation, brickwork courses, shelving, worktops, machinery bases and shorter pipe and conduit runs. It is also the size that still fits diagonally into a carcase or a riser, which a metre level does not.

Three vials cover horizontal, vertical and 45 degrees. Two things about using them properly are worth saying. For plumb, check on two faces at right angles — an upright can look plumb from the front while leaning sideways. And read the bubble from directly above; looking at it from an angle shifts its apparent position and is a common source of small errors that add up across a job.

The frame is aluminium: light enough to hold out one-handed, stiff enough not to bend, and dimensionally stable so it reads the same in the morning and the afternoon. Check it before you trust it, and do this whenever it has been dropped: read a surface, mark the position, then turn the level end for end in exactly the same place. The bubble should read identically. If it does not, the vials have shifted and every wall, frame and worktop set with it will be out — which is the sort of error that is discovered after the tiling is on.
