The blade here is steel, nickel plated, and that choice has consequences worth understanding because the alternative in this range is fibreglass.

Steel's advantage is accuracy. It barely stretches. Pull a steel tape taut over twenty metres and the reading is the distance, which is what you want when setting out a building, marking foundations or checking a diagonal for square. A fibreglass tape under the same tension stretches slightly, and over long distances that becomes a real error. If the measurement is going to be built to, steel is the honest choice.

Steel's disadvantages are equally real and worth stating. It conducts electricity, so a steel tape must never be used anywhere near overhead power lines — this is a genuine and recurring cause of fatal accidents on sites, and the fibreglass tapes in this range exist precisely for that work. Steel also rusts if it is put away wet, and it will kink permanently if it is trodden on or dragged round a corner.

The nickel plating resists corrosion and keeps the graduations readable. The 3:1 gear ratio is a genuine convenience — the reel turns three times for each turn of the handle, so winding twenty metres back in takes a third of the cranking.
