Two hundred millimetres of capacity is the reason to choose this over the 150mm caliper, and it is a straightforward one: a caliper cannot measure anything larger than it opens.
That sounds obvious and it catches people out constantly, because the jump comes at an awkward place. A 150mm caliper covers most small components, and then a job appears with a 170mm flange, a 180mm pulley, a large bearing housing or a length of pipe, and the instrument is simply useless. Anybody working on larger machinery, commercial vehicle components, pumps, compressors or fabricated parts meets that limit regularly. Two hundred millimetres covers considerably more of it.
The four measuring functions are the same as on the smaller caliper and all four are worth using. The lower jaws measure external dimensions — shaft diameters, plate thicknesses, component widths. The upper jaws measure internal dimensions — bores, tube inside diameters, gaps. The rod that extends from the tail measures depth, for holes and recesses. And the stepped jaw ends measure a step, the height of one surface above another. Most people use only the external jaws and buy separate tools for the rest.
The scale is laser engraved and the finish is satin. Both matter for reading accuracy rather than appearance. Vernier graduations are very fine, and reading one depends on judging which of a row of close-spaced lines aligns with another — printed markings blur and wear under daily handling in oil and swarf, while engraved lines are cut into the metal and remain crisp. A satin finish does not throw lamp glare back at you while you are doing that.
The buyers are engineering and machine shops, commercial vehicle and plant workshops, pump and compressor servicing, toolrooms, fabrication shops, quality inspection, and hardware dealers supplying industry.
Three habits. Check the zero with the jaws closed before you measure — dirt in the jaws or a knock will offset every reading. Use light, consistent pressure, since squeezing a caliper hard reads under size and inconsistent grip is the main reason two people get two answers. And clean the jaws and the workpiece first: a chip of swarf trapped between them is larger than the tolerance you are trying to measure. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price.
