The accuracy is the reason for steel. Every tape stretches a little under the tension you apply, and fibreglass stretches appreciably more than steel does. Across a hundred metres that difference is no longer academic — it is a cumulative error in exactly the measurements where error costs the most: a boundary being established, a building line being set out, a road centreline, a large foundation. Steel barely moves, so a taut reading is the distance.

The steel case is the second half of the specification and it earns its place on a tape this size. A hundred metres of steel is a hundred metres of conductor, and extending one near overhead power lines is a documented cause of fatalities on construction and survey work.
