A combination square is several tools in one, and it is probably the most useful single measuring tool a workshop can own — which is why it has survived unchanged for over a century.
The head slides along a graduated 300mm rule and locks anywhere on it, and that arrangement gives you a remarkable amount. Square marking at ninety degrees, using one face of the head. Mitre marking at forty-five degrees, using the other. A depth gauge, by sliding the rule down into a recess and locking it. A marking gauge, by setting the rule to a distance and running the head along an edge with a pencil at the rule's end — which scribes a line parallel to that edge, a job people usually do badly with a tape. A height gauge on a bench. And with the head removed, a plain steel rule.
The impact-resistant vial built into the head adds a small spirit level, which turns it into a level for short work — checking a bracket or a fitting without fetching anything else.
The body is aluminium alloy, keeping a tool that is constantly picked up light in the hand, and the rule is high quality stainless steel at HRC greater than 30 — hard enough to resist the burrs and dings that would ruin a reference edge, tough rather than brittle, and rust-free, which matters because the tool's accuracy lives in a straight edge and legible graduations.
The buyers are carpenters and joiners, cabinet and furniture makers, engineering and machine shops, sheet metal workers, shopfitters, technical training workshops, and hardware dealers supplying benches.
Two habits. Lock the head firmly before marking, because a head that creeps along the rule gives a wrong measurement with no sign that anything moved. And check the square itself as you would a try square: set the head against a known straight edge, scribe a line along the rule, flip the tool over onto the same edge at the same point and scribe again. The two lines should coincide; if they diverge, the head is out, and the divergence is twice the error.
Keep the rule's slot and the locking bolt clean, since sawdust and grit packed into the slot stop the head seating square. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
