A bevel protractor answers the question a try square cannot: not "is this ninety degrees?" but "what angle is this, exactly?" — and it lets you set and mark any angle you choose.
The blade swivels through 180 degrees against a graduated scale on the stock, so you can either read an existing angle off a workpiece or set the blade to a required angle, lock it, and use it as a marking guide. That covers roof and stair pitches, mitres of any angle, bevelled edges, machine setups, splayed frames and joints, and the general business of transferring an angle from a drawing to a workpiece or from one workpiece to another.
The scale is metric with embossed graduation. Embossing is worth noting because it is a durability specification rather than a cosmetic one: the graduations are formed into the metal rather than printed onto it, so they cannot wear off, be scrubbed away by cleaning, or be dissolved by oil and solvent. A printed scale on a tool that is handled all day in a workshop gradually becomes unreadable in the places it is gripped most, which are usually the numbers you use most.
The material is high quality stainless steel at HRC greater than 30. That hardness figure is modest by cutting tool standards and correctly so — this is not a cutting tool. What it needs is enough hardness to resist the dings and burrs that would spoil a reference edge, while staying tough rather than brittle. Stainless matters because a measuring tool's worth lies in true edges and readable graduations, and rust attacks both. At 90x150mm it is a comfortable bench and site size.
The buyers are carpenters and joiners, roofing and stair carpenters, engineering and fabrication workshops, sheet metal workers, machine setters, technical training workshops, and hardware dealers supplying trades.
Two habits. Lock the blade firmly before marking, and check it has not crept afterwards — a bevel that slips between setting and marking gives you a wrong angle with complete confidence. And keep the pivot clean and lightly oiled: grit in the pivot makes the blade stiff, and a stiff blade gets forced, which is how the setting is knocked past where you wanted it.
