Ten metres earns its place because measurements do not respect the length of your tape. Room lengths, wall runs, roof spans, pipe and cable routes, boundary and setting-out dimensions all cross five metres routinely, and the alternative to a long tape is taking two measurements and adding them, which introduces error exactly where you were trying to be accurate. One pull is always better than two.

The 25mm width is what makes ten metres usable rather than merely available. Standout — how far the blade reaches out unsupported before it buckles — comes from the depth of the curve across the blade's section, and a wider blade curves more deeply and stays rigid further out. A long narrow tape is a frustrating thing to own.

The blade is 0.12mm thick 65Mn spring steel with a heat-treated rewind spring. The spring deserves attention on a tape this long, because it is working far harder than on a five metre: twice the blade to pull back and a much tighter wind at full extension. That is why long tapes are where cheap springs fail first, and why the heat treatment is on the specification.

The case is high impact ABS with a strong belt clip. This is the plain-cased line — if the tape will spend its life on a concrete site floor, the rubber-covered tapes in this range take the drops better.

Three points, all more important at this length. Never let ten metres of blade rewind freely — there is considerable stored energy, the hook hits the case hard enough to bend, and a blade whipping out of a case has cut people's hands. Feed it back under control, letting it run through your fingers. Keep the blade dry and wipe it as it returns after wet work, because ten metres of damp steel wound tight corrodes from the inside out. And check the hook is straight from time to time: it is designed to slide by its own thickness so the tape reads true both hooked and butted, but once bent it reads wrong in one direction only, which is the hardest kind of error to notice.
