A steel square — a framing or roofing square — is a large fixed right angle with graduated arms, and it does a different job from a try square. Where a try square checks and marks small work against an edge, a steel square is laid on large work to check and set out squareness over a substantial distance.

At 150x300mm this is the smaller of the two stainless squares here, and it suits joinery, cabinet work, sheet material marking, and checking assemblies where a try square's blade is too short to detect a gradual error. Both arms are graduated, so it measures as well as squares — which is what makes it a setting-out tool rather than only a checking one.

The embossed graduation is a durability specification and worth understanding. The numbers are formed into the metal rather than printed on it, so they cannot wear away under handling, be scrubbed off during cleaning, or be dissolved by oil and solvent. On a tool that spends its life being slid across timber and gripped in the same places, a printed scale becomes unreadable exactly where it is used most — usually within a couple of years.

The material is high quality stainless steel at HRC greater than 30. The hardness is deliberately moderate: this is a reference tool, not a cutting tool, and what it needs is enough hardness to resist the burrs and dings that would spoil a true edge, with enough toughness not to be brittle. Stainless matters because everything a square is worth lies in straight edges and readable graduations, and rust attacks both at once.

Check it before you trust it, exactly as you would a try square. Set one arm against a known straight edge and scribe a line along the other. Flip the square over, align it on the same edge at the same point, and scribe again. True lines coincide; a square that is out gives two diverging lines, and the divergence is twice the actual error.
