The figure is 0.5mm per metre, and at this length that is exactly what the tool reports over its own span: half a millimetre. The more important point is what length buys. A level reads only the surface beneath it, so a short level stepped along a long run compounds its own tolerance at every step and cannot see the gradual rise or fall between its ends. A metre level takes in far more of the real surface at once, which is why floors, screeds, wall plates, brickwork courses, worktop runs, door and window openings at full height, and machinery beds are all checked with a long level rather than a short one.

The frame is heavy duty aluminium at 1.5mm wall thickness, and at a metre that thickness is doing serious work. A long level is a beam, and a thin one sags under its own weight and flexes when pressed against a wall — at which point it reads its own bend and reports it as the surface. Wall thickness is what stops that, and it is why a cheap long level can be worse than a good short one.

Three vials cover 90, 180 and 45 degrees, with anti-shock end caps. Ends are where levels get destroyed: a metre level stood in a corner falls, lands on an end, and the shock goes straight into the vial housing. The caps absorb it.

It is magnetic, which holds it to steel sections, ducting and machine frames.

Two habits. Check it end for end whenever it has been dropped and before any job that matters: read a surface, reverse the level in the same place, and the bubble must sit identically.
