Fibreglass is the only sensible material at this length and for this work, and the reason is safety before anything else. A hundred metres of steel tape is a hundred metres of conductor. Extending one near overhead power lines is a documented cause of fatal accidents, and it happens in the most ordinary way — someone walking backwards paying out the tape, eyes on the ground, while the far end rises into a line nobody thought about. It also does not rust when wound away damp, which over a wet season matters a great deal to a tape this expensive to replace, and it does not take the permanent kink that ruins steel when it is trodden on or dragged over a kerb.

The stretch has to be understood at this length rather than merely acknowledged. Fibreglass extends under tension, and across a hundred metres the difference between a firm pull and a gentle one is real. For boundary, area, agricultural and estimating work that is accepted practice. For precision setting-out it is not the right instrument, and no fibreglass tape is. The discipline that makes it reliable is consistency: pull with the same moderate, steady tension every time, keep the tape straight and off the ground where you can, and your measurements will at least be consistent with one another.
