Fifty metres of fibreglass covers the distances that a thirty metre tape leaves you joining together: full plot boundaries, long fence and irrigation runs, large building footprints, road and drain lengths, and land measurement.

At this length two things about fibreglass become more significant, one good and one to manage.

The good one is safety, and it is the main reason this material exists in long tapes. Fibreglass does not conduct electricity. Fifty metres of steel tape pulled out under overhead power lines is a well-documented cause of fatalities on construction, utility and agricultural sites, and the circumstances are always mundane — someone walking backwards paying out the tape, watching their footing, while the far end rises into a line nobody looked at. On plantation, roadside, plot and utility work here, overheads are near enough everywhere. Fibreglass is the correct tool, not the economical one.

Its other advantages hold at any length: it does not rust when wound away damp, which matters through the wet season, and it does not take the permanent kink that a steel tape suffers when trodden on or dragged over a kerb.

The one to manage is stretch. Fibreglass extends slightly under tension, and at fifty metres a hard pull against a gentle one is a genuinely measurable difference. For area, boundary, fencing, irrigation and estimating work that is acceptable. For setting out a building line or checking a diagonal for square — anything that will be built to — steel is the accurate instrument and there is a 50m steel tape in this range. The practical answer is to pull with consistent, moderate tension every time so your measurements are at least consistent with each other.
