That is the whole difference, and it is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. If you carry a long tape on a belt, buy the version with the clip. If your long tape lives in a site box, a vehicle or a surveyor's bag and is fetched when needed — which is how most long tapes are actually used, since nobody wears a 30m reel all day — the clip is paying for something you will not use.

What you are getting either way is the important part: a fibreglass blade. Fibreglass does not conduct electricity, and that is a safety property rather than a convenience. A steel long tape extended near overhead power lines is a documented cause of fatal accidents on construction, utility and agricultural sites, and it happens in a very ordinary way — someone walking backwards pulling the tape out, watching the ground, while the far end rises into a line nobody checked. On any site with live overheads, fibreglass is the correct tool.

It also does not rust, which matters through a wet season, and it does not take the permanent kink that ruins a steel tape trodden on or dragged round a kerb.

The trade is stretch. Fibreglass extends a little under tension, so a hard pull reads longer than a gentle one, and over thirty metres that is measurable. For area and plot measurement, fencing, landscaping, estimating and service runs it is immaterial. For setting out a building or checking a diagonal for square, where the number will be built to, steel is the more accurate instrument. Consistent moderate tension is what keeps a fibreglass tape honest.
