Micrometer (0-25)

The reason for that accuracy is mechanical. A caliper's jaws slide, and how hard you squeeze changes the reading. A micrometer works through a precision screw thread: turning the thimble advances the spindle by an exact, known amount per revolution, so the reading comes from counting rotation rather than from judging a sliding scale. The screw multiplies a small movement into a large, easily read one. That is why a micrometer resolves to 0.01mm — the division value here — while remaining repeatable in a way a caliper cannot match.

Most micrometers also carry a ratchet or friction thimble at the end, which slips once a set contact force is reached, so every measurement is taken at the same pressure. That single feature removes the biggest source of error in caliper work, where one person's firm grip reads differently from another's.

The range is 0 to 25mm, and this is the point people find surprising: a micrometer covers only a 25mm span, not from zero to its maximum. The screw can only be so long and still stay accurate. So 0-25mm handles small work — pins, fasteners, small shafts, sheet and plate thickness, wire, bearing races and precision components up to 25mm — and larger work needs the next micrometer up, which is why they are bought as a progression rather than as a single tool.

Three habits. Check the zero with the anvils closed before every session and adjust if needed, since a micrometer that reads 0.01 high reads everything 0.01 high. Use the ratchet rather than the thimble for the final approach, every time. And keep the anvil faces spotless — they are lapped flat, and a fingerprint or a speck of swarf between them is a genuine part of the tolerance you are measuring.
