The blade slides and pivots in the stock and locks at any angle. You set it against an existing angle — the pitch of a rafter, the splay of an old frame, the corner of a room that is not ninety degrees, the taper on a component — lock it, and carry that exact angle to the workpiece, the saw or the bench. You never need to know what the angle is in degrees, and that is the point. A great deal of joinery and repair work involves matching what is there rather than working to a drawing, and reading an angle off, writing it down and setting it again introduces error at every step.

The classic uses: transferring roof and rafter angles, fitting joinery into rooms whose corners are not square (which is most old buildings), copying the angle on an existing component you are replacing, setting a saw or a machine table to match a workpiece, and marking repeated angled cuts.

The blade slides as well as pivots, which lets you set the working length as well as the angle — useful in a confined space or when the angle you are copying is short.

At 250mm it is the standard bench and site size. The blade is stainless steel, which keeps its edge straight and unpitted, and the handle is plastic.

Two habits decide whether a sliding bevel is useful or misleading. Lock it hard, and then check the setting has not moved before you mark — a bevel that slips between the angle you copied and the line you draw gives you a wrong angle with total confidence, and it is the one failure this tool has. Keep the locking mechanism clean and the pivot lightly oiled, since a gritty pivot needs forcing and forcing is what shifts the setting.
