What a try square gives you is a fixed, trustworthy right angle, and its value is that everything else depends on it. Cut a board with a line that is a degree out and the joint has a gap. Assemble a carcase whose sides are not square and it will not close up, will not sit flat and will not take a door properly. Squareness errors do not stay put; they accumulate through an assembly and appear at the end when they are expensive to fix.

The tool is used two ways: stock against the edge of the work and the blade marks a square line for cutting; blade and stock laid into a corner to check whether two surfaces genuinely meet at ninety degrees, with any light showing between them telling you how far out it is.

Test the square itself before you rely on it, and again after any drop. Hold the stock against a known straight edge — a jointed board edge or a steel rule — and scribe a line down the blade. Then turn the square over, set the stock on the same edge at the same spot, and scribe again. Two lines on top of each other means the square is true; two lines diverging means it is not, and the gap between them is twice the actual error, which makes the check unusually sensitive.
