The tapered shape is not styling. It lets the level sit into a corner, between two obstructions, or along a pipe where a rectangular frame would foul, and the narrow ends make it easier to read in a confined space.

The magnet is the feature that makes torpedo levels indispensable to certain trades. Placed against a steel pipe, a conduit, a duct, an RSJ or a machine frame, it stays there on its own — and levelling a length of pipe usually means holding the pipe with one hand, a clip with the other, and having nothing left over. A level that holds itself is a third hand.

Three high visibility vials give horizontal, vertical and 45 degrees. The 45 vial earns its place more on a torpedo level than on a long one, because pipework, bracing and duct runs at 45 degrees are exactly the sort of short-span work this tool is used for.

The construction is an ABS case with an aluminium rail, which is a sensible combination for a tool that gets dropped and knocked about: the aluminium rail provides a true, rigid measuring edge while the moulded case takes the impacts and protects the vials.

Two things. A short level reads only the short surface it is sitting on, so it is right for setting a fitting and wrong for checking a long run — use a longer level for anything that has to be true across a distance. And check it end for end from time to time, especially after a drop: read a surface, reverse the level in the same spot, and the bubble should read the same.
