Long tapes lead hard lives. They are dropped, kicked, stood on, thrown into truck beds and left on site floors, and the case is what protects the blade and the winding mechanism from all of it. A plastic case that has been cracked lets grit into the reel and lets the blade catch on the split edge, at which point the tape is finished. A steel case takes those knocks and carries on, which is why surveyors and civil contractors — the people who use long tapes daily rather than occasionally — tend to buy steel-cased ones.

The blade is steel, nickel plated, with a clear durable scale, and the material matters as much as the case. Steel barely stretches, so a fifty metre measurement pulled taut reads the distance rather than the distance plus whatever the tension added. That is what you want for setting out building lines, marking foundations, measuring boundaries and checking diagonals for square — any measurement that will be built to. A fibreglass tape stretches slightly and is the wrong instrument for that work.

The two costs of steel must be stated. It conducts electricity, and a steel long tape extended near overhead power lines is a recognised cause of fatal accidents on site — the fibreglass tapes in this range exist for exactly that situation, and on a job with live overheads they are the correct tool rather than the cheaper one. And steel rusts if it is wound in wet, and takes a permanent kink if trodden on or dragged round a kerb, after which that section reads short.

The nickel plating resists corrosion and keeps the graduations crisp.

Wipe the blade dry as it winds in, every time. Keep it off the ground where vehicles and boots go.
