Aluminium Three Vials Level (300)

Levelling a bracket, a shelf support, a small appliance, a switch box, a section of pipe between two clips, or anything inside a cabinet or a confined space means placing the level on a surface that may only be a few inches long. A metre level bridges across it and reads the surrounding structure instead of the thing you are setting. At 300mm this reads what it is sitting on.

The trade must be understood, because it is the commonest mistake made with short levels. A level only reports the surface under its own length. Set a long run — a worktop, a row of tiles, a wall plate — with a 300mm level and you will get every 300mm segment level while the whole run wanders, because a short level cannot see the dips and humps between its ends. For long work, use a long level or a straightedge. For short work, use this.

Three vials is what makes it general purpose: one for horizontal, one for vertical, and one at 45 degrees. The 45 is more useful than people expect — bracing, pipework, roof and stair members and diagonal supports all need it, and setting them by eye is guesswork.

The frame is aluminium, which is light, rigid and dimensionally stable, and it is magnetic. Magnets are the feature that transforms a level for anybody working in steel: it sticks to a steel section, a pipe, a duct, an RSJ or a machine frame and stays there, leaving both your hands free to adjust the work.

Two habits worth having with any level. Check it before you trust it: stand it on a surface, note the reading, then turn it end for end in the same place — the bubble should read the same both ways. If it does not, the level is out and everything you set with it will be too. And put it down rather than dropping it; the vials are set in the frame at manufacture and a hard knock moves them, after which a level that looks perfect lies to you.
