That second use is the one worth thinking about. When you set a square into a corner to test it, the blade only tells you about the length it spans. A 250mm square laid into the corner of a large carcase reports the first 250mm — and a panel can be square at the corner and drifting away further along. A longer blade reads more of the surface and catches the error the short one misses. On wide boards, large frames, door assemblies, carcase sides and sheet material, that extra reach is the accuracy.

The trade is handling. A 400mm square is less convenient for small work and does not fit inside a small assembly, which is why most workshops own two sizes rather than treating the large one as an upgrade.

The stock is high quality aluminium — light for its size, and immune to the rust that would attack the precisely machined right angle a square exists to provide.

Check the square itself before trusting it, and after any drop. Set the stock against a known straight edge and scribe a line along the blade; turn the square over, set it on the same edge at the same point, and scribe again. If the square is true the lines coincide exactly. If not, they diverge by twice the error — which makes the test far more sensitive than trying to eye the angle.

Do this when the square arrives, not only after an accident. A square that is out does not look damaged and does not feel wrong; it simply makes every cut and every assembly in a job wrong by the same amount, consistently and confidently, and the error is discovered when the pieces refuse to go together.
