The reason to specify fibreglass is straightforward and it is worth being direct about it. Fibreglass does not conduct. A steel tape does, and a steel long tape extended near overhead power lines is a recognised cause of fatalities on construction, utility and agricultural sites. The circumstances are always similar: a tape pulled out at speed, someone walking backwards watching the ground, and the far end rising into a line nobody had looked at. Where there are live overheads — which in practice means most roadside, plot and estate work here — this is the tool to use, and it is not a compromise.

It brings two other benefits that matter in this climate. It does not rust, so winding it away damp does not ruin it, which is a real advantage through the wet season. And it does not kink permanently when trodden on or dragged round a kerb, which steel does, after which the kinked section reads short for the rest of the tape's life.

The trade is stretch. Fibreglass extends slightly under tension, so a hard pull reads longer than a gentle one, and over thirty metres that is a measurable difference. For plot and area measurement, fencing, landscaping, service runs and estimating it does not matter. For setting out a building line or checking diagonals for square — measurements that will be built to — steel is the more accurate instrument, and there is a 30m steel tape in this range. Pulling with consistent, moderate tension is what keeps a fibreglass tape reliable.
