Hammers look interchangeable and are not. This range covers claw hammers in British and French patterns, ball pein and machinist hammers, stoning hammers in several weights, dead blow and rubber mallets, cold and point chisels with TPR handles, pin and hollow punch sets, and steel letter and number stamps — with a choice of wood or fibreglass handles across much of it.

Match the hammer to the work. A claw hammer is for nails and for pulling them; using it on a cold chisel chips the face, because it is not hardened for striking steel. A ball pein or machinist hammer is the one for chisels, punches and metalwork. A stoning hammer is for breaking and dressing stone and concrete, and comes in weights heavy enough to do real damage to whatever you are aiming at, including your hand. A dead blow mallet is filled with shot so it lands without bouncing back, which is what you want when seating a part you do not wish to mark. A rubber mallet does the same job more gently on tiles and trim.

Handles are a genuine choice, not just a price difference. A wooden handle absorbs shock well and can be replaced when it splits, which suits a tool that lives in one workshop. Fibreglass shrugs off damp, does not shrink or loosen in a humid store, and survives an overstrike that would break timber — worth considering for tools that live in a van or outdoors.

Punches and chisels are consumables in the sense that they mushroom over with use. A mushroomed head throws steel splinters when struck, so grind it back before it gets dangerous, and wear eye protection whenever steel meets steel.
