Flat Cold Chisel (24x18x300)

The wider 24mm edge cuts more per pass, which matters on long work — chasing a channel the length of a wall, stripping a floor's worth of old tile bed, cutting a long line in masonry. The trade is that a wider edge spreads the hammer blow over more material, so it bites less hard into anything dense. Wider is faster in soft material and slower in hard, which is why the range has both widths rather than one.

The 300mm length puts real distance between the hammer and your hand, and lets the chisel reach into a chase, a hole or a recess you have already started. On breaking-out work where blows are heavy and debris sprays, that distance is worth having for its own sake.

The 18mm body is what keeps a 300mm chisel from flexing. A struck chisel is a column loaded on its end, and a long slender one bends and deflects instead of driving energy to the edge. Thickening the body as the length grows is what keeps the blow arriving where you aimed it.

The protect grip is a safety item rather than a comfort. With one hand holding the chisel and the other swinging a hammer, missed blows happen, and the flared guard takes the impact instead of your knuckles.

The most serious hazard with any cold chisel is mushrooming, and it is worth taking seriously. The struck end is deliberately softer than the cutting edge so that it absorbs hammer blows, and over time it spreads out with thin edges curling over the side. Those curls are brittle. Eventually one snaps off under a blow and flies at speed, which is a well-documented cause of eye injuries and of steel splinters driven into skin. Dress the head back to a clean chamfer with a grinder as soon as any curl appears, and keep it slightly bevelled rather than square. A mushroomed chisel head is a hazard, not merely a worn tool.

Practical points. Eye protection every time, without exception. Hold the chisel at a shallow angle so it undercuts and lifts material rather than burying itself. Sharpen the edge with a file or a grinder and keep it cool in water while you do, since overheating draws the temper and leaves you with a soft edge that will not hold. And strike square.
