A stoning hammer is a mason's tool, made for dressing and breaking stone, splitting block, trimming brick and the general shaping work that goes on wherever masonry is cut to fit. At one kilogram this is the lighter of the wood-handled range and the one for controlled work — trimming a block to size, knocking a corner off to fit, dressing a face, and the endless small adjustments that a mason makes with a hammer rather than a saw.

The handle is oak, and choosing a timber handle over fibreglass is a genuine decision rather than a matter of cost, so it is worth setting out both sides. Oak is a traditional hammer timber because it is dense, tough and stiff, and because wood absorbs vibration in a way many people find easier on the hands over a long day of repetitive striking. It has one advantage no synthetic handle can match: when it eventually breaks, the head can be re-hung on a new handle, so the tool is repairable rather than disposable, and a mason who likes a particular head can keep it for a working lifetime. The counterpart is that timber moves with humidity — a handle can shrink and loosen in the eye during a dry spell, and it will not tolerate being left out in the wet. A loose head is dangerous and must be dealt with before the next blow, not after.

The head is forged fine grain steel, hardened and tempered to HRC greater than 48, with a matt black powder painted finish. That hardness figure is deliberately moderate and it is a safety specification. Hardened much beyond it, a striking face becomes brittle and chips instead of denting, and chips leaving a hammer face travel fast enough to cause serious eye injury. Around 48 the face resists mushrooming for years and still deforms rather than fractures when a blow lands badly. On stone, where blows are frequently at an angle and the material is abrasive, that toughness matters more than it would on a bench.

Look after the handle and it will look after you. Check the head for tightness before every session and re-wedge it at the first sign of movement.
