The list of jobs is long and mostly unglamorous: cutting a straight edge in brick or block, chasing a channel in masonry for conduit or pipe, cleaning mortar out of a joint for repointing, stripping old tile beds and render off a wall, cutting sheet metal, shearing off a rusted bolt or a rivet head that will not turn, cutting a nut off a seized stud, and trimming and dressing metal at a bench. The last group is worth pausing on, because a flat cold chisel remains the fastest way to remove a fastener that has defeated every spanner — a chisel driven into the corner of a nut at an angle will shear it or spin it off when nothing else will.

The specification lists a protect grip, and it is a genuine safety component. Holding a chisel in one hand while swinging a hammer with the other means that sooner or later the hammer finds the hand, and the flared guard between the struck end and your fingers takes that blow instead of your knuckles.

The hazard that matters most, though, is mushrooming, and it is worth understanding properly. A cold chisel's struck end is deliberately left softer than its cutting edge so that it absorbs hammer blows rather than shattering. Over time it spreads outward into a mushroom, with thin edges curling over the sides. Those curled edges are brittle, and a hammer blow eventually snaps one off and throws it at high speed — a documented and common cause of eye injuries and of steel splinters embedded in skin. Grinding the head back to a clean chamfer takes a minute and should be done as soon as the curl appears. Never strike a chisel whose head has mushroomed.

The material is carbon steel, heat treated, with a powder coated finish that keeps it from rusting in a damp toolbox.

Working notes. Wear eye protection without exception — this is the tool that most reliably produces flying fragments, from the work and potentially from the chisel itself. Work at a shallow angle so the chisel cuts and lifts rather than burying itself. Keep the edge sharp with a file or a grinder, cooling it in water as you go so you do not draw the temper out and soften it. And strike squarely.
