Stoning Hammer with Fiberglass Handle (1000g)

The head is forged from fine-grain steel, then hardened and tempered to above HRC 48. That hardness figure is the number to pay attention to when you are choosing a striking tool. Below about 45 HRC a hammer face starts to deform and mushroom, and a mushroomed head throws steel splinters. Above roughly 55 it becomes brittle enough to chip. Above HRC 48, properly tempered, sits in the working range where the face resists denting but will not shatter against a chisel head. Fine-grain steel matters for the same reason — a coarse grain structure is where cracks start.

The head is powder-painted matt black rather than lacquered. Powder coating is tougher and, more usefully here, it does not flake off in the first week and leave bare steel to rust in a damp toolbag.

The shaft is fiberglass, and for a hammer used on stone that is the right choice over timber. A wooden handle dries out, shrinks and eventually lets the head loosen — the classic and dangerous failure. Fiberglass does not, and it absorbs a good deal of the shock that otherwise travels into your wrist and elbow through a day of repeated striking. The cushion grip is ergonomically shaped, which on a hammer means it locates your hand in the same place every swing and does not need to be gripped hard to stay put. Loosening your grip is what saves your elbow.

At 1000g this is a two-handed-accuracy, one-handed-power tool: heavy enough to break and dress block, light enough to swing repeatedly and place a blow where you are looking. For heavy demolition step up to a sledge; for driving nails use a claw hammer, as a stoning hammer face is not shaped for it.

Masons and block layers are the main buyers, along with tilers breaking out old work, general builders, and demolition and site labour. Plumbers and electricians carry one for chasing walls with a cold chisel. Hardware shops serving the building trade sell them steadily and they come 24 to a carton.
