A point chisel drives the entire hammer blow into a single small area. The pressure that generates at the tip is enormous, and that is what makes material fail rather than being cut away. Brick and block split. Concrete cracks and breaks outwards. Old mortar and tile beds break loose. A hole can be punched through masonry. A rusted assembly cracks apart. The flat chisel beside it is a cutting tool for lines and surfaces; this is a breaking tool for making things come apart, and using one where the other belongs is why jobs take three times as long as they should.

There is a technique that follows from that, and it saves a lot of effort. Work from a free edge or from a hole you have already started, so each blow breaks material into a space it can move into. Hammering repeatedly into the middle of an unbroken surface buries the point — the surrounding material is confined, cannot move, and simply absorbs the energy.

The steel is chrome vanadium, tempered and heat treated, which is a better specification than the plain carbon steel of the standard cold chisels. Chromium raises hardness and wear resistance while vanadium refines the grain and adds toughness, so the point holds its shape against masonry instead of blunting quickly — and a blunt point is the single biggest cause of wasted effort with this tool, because it skids and needs far more blows.

The TPR handle is thermoplastic rubber moulded over the body, and it does three jobs. It grips securely when your hand is wet or covered in dust. It damps a great deal of the vibration a hammer blow sends up a steel bar into your fingers, which matters over a long session. And it flares to shield your hand from the hammer, which with one hand holding and one hand swinging is not a theoretical concern.
