Installation Mallet (27mm)

At 27mm this is the smaller of the two, and the smaller face is about precision. A compact head gets into a confined space and lands its blow on one particular spot — the edge of a laminate board, a tapping block on a floorboard, a small assembly being persuaded together, a bearing being started square. Where a larger face would foul on the surrounding work or spread the blow across more than you intended, this one does not.

The jobs are the assembly jobs. Laying laminate and engineered flooring, where every board is tapped home against the last and any mark shows for the life of the floor. Fitting joinery together — tapping a tenon into a mortice, closing a mitre, seating a dowel. Aligning and seating components in machinery and equipment. Fitting trim and beading. Setting tiles and bedding pavers where a steel hammer would simply crack them. Persuading interference-fit parts together without bruising a machined surface.

The reason a non-marking mallet is not a soft option is worth stating. On a machined or finished component, a dent from a steel hammer is not merely cosmetic. A bruised sealing face leaks. A dented bearing seat runs rough. A marked laminate edge is visible forever. Using a mallet is not being gentle — it is the correct tool for the job, and the steel hammer is the wrong one.

The handle is fibreglass, which suits a tool that spends its life in a toolbox and on floors: it does not shrink loose in the head, does not rot, and absorbs a share of the shock.

Two things to know. PVC hardens and becomes less forgiving in the cold, so a mallet left in an unheated store overnight is more likely to mark work first thing than it is later in the day — a couple of warm-up blows on scrap solves it. And check the face for splits and chunks taken out of it, because a damaged mallet face concentrates its blow on the remaining edge and starts marking exactly what it was bought to protect.
