Start with what a point chisel does. Every bit of the hammer blow is funnelled into a very small area, which produces extremely high local pressure. That is what you need for splitting and breaking rather than cutting: splitting brick, block and stone, starting a break in concrete, breaking out old mortar and tile beds, punching a hole through masonry, and cracking a seized or rusted assembly apart. It is the tool for making material fail, where a flat chisel is the tool for cutting a line.

The specification lists a protect grip, and this is a genuinely important safety component rather than a comfort feature. A hand-struck chisel is held by one hand while the other swings a hammer, and the two do not always meet as intended. A missed blow lands on the hand. The guard is a flared rubber or plastic sleeve that sits between the striking end and your fingers, and it takes the blow that would otherwise land on your knuckles. Anybody who has spent time with unguarded chisels knows exactly why this is on the specification.

The more serious hazard is one every chisel user should understand: mushrooming. The struck end of a cold chisel is deliberately left softer than the cutting end so it can absorb hammer blows, and over time it spreads out into a mushroom shape with thin, ragged edges curling over the sides. Those curled edges are brittle, and eventually a hammer blow snaps a piece off and flings it at high speed. Chisel-head fragments are a well-known cause of eye injury and of embedded steel splinters. The remedy is simple and takes a minute: grind the mushroomed edge back to a clean chamfer as soon as it starts to form, and keep the head slightly bevelled rather than square. Never work with a chisel whose head has curled.

The material is carbon steel, heat treated and powder coated. Powder coating keeps a tool that lives in a damp toolbox from rusting; carbon steel correctly heat treated gives a point that holds up against masonry.

Wear eye protection every single time, without exception. Strike squarely — a glancing blow sends the chisel out of your hand. Work from a free edge where you can.
