A ball pein hammer is the engineer's hammer, and the round end that gives it its name is not decoration. The flat face does the ordinary striking; the ball is for peening — working metal by hitting it in a way that spreads and shapes it rather than simply driving it. Setting a rivet over so it fills its hole and clamps tight, closing the end of a pin, spreading the edge of a bearing race, dressing a burr down flat, starting a shape in sheet: these all want a rounded striking surface that will not leave a hard edge mark in the work.

At 450 grams — one pound — this is the light one, and light means precise. It is the weight for small rivets, delicate peening, striking small punches and centre punches, adjusting and setting small assemblies, and general bench work where you want to hit exactly one thing exactly hard enough. On fine work a heavy hammer is not a stronger tool, it is a less accurate one.

The specification line worth pausing on is fully ground face and cheeks. The face being ground means it is machined flat and true after forging rather than left as forged, so it strikes squarely and does not print a forging texture into the work. Grinding the cheeks — the sides of the head — is the tell of a properly made hammer: it means the head has been dressed all over rather than only where it strikes, which gives clean edges, consistent dimensions and a head that sits properly balanced on the shaft.

The head is forged fine grain steel, hardened to over HRC 48. That number is moderate on purpose. A hammer face taken much harder becomes brittle, and brittle faces chip rather than dent when a blow lands badly. Fragments off a hammer face travel fast enough to blind, and this is one of the better-documented workshop eye injuries. Around 48 the face stays flat and unmushroomed for years while remaining tough enough to deform rather than fracture.

The handle is a two-colour fibreglass shaft with a moulded cushion grip — no shrinking out of the eye with the weather, no rot, and a useful share of the shock absorbed before it reaches your wrist.
