The material is chrome vanadium, tempered and heat treated. That is a genuine step up from the carbon steel used on the standard cold chisels. Chrome vanadium is the alloy behind good spanners, sockets and quality hand tools — chromium raises hardness and wear resistance, vanadium refines the grain and adds toughness, and the combination gives an edge that stays sharp under repeated cutting without becoming brittle enough to chip. On a chisel that is expected to cut steel as well as masonry, that matters: a carbon steel edge rolls over on hard material where a chrome vanadium one keeps cutting.

The TPR handle is the second difference. TPR is thermoplastic rubber, a material that behaves like rubber but is moulded like a plastic, and it is used here as a full-length grip and guard rather than a small collar. That does three things at once. It gives a secure hold on a tool that is otherwise a smooth steel bar, which is exactly what you want when your hand is wet or dusty. It absorbs a good deal of the vibration that a hammer blow sends up the chisel into your fingers, which over a morning of chasing a wall is the difference between comfort and numb hands. And it flares out to shield your hand from the hammer — because with one hand holding and the other swinging, the hammer eventually finds the hand.

The finish is powder paint for rust resistance, which matters on a tool that lives in a damp toolbox.

The flat edge is for cutting rather than breaking: chasing channels in masonry, cutting straight lines in brick and block, raking out mortar joints for repointing, stripping tile beds and render, cutting sheet metal, and shearing off rusted bolts, rivets and nuts that will not turn.

The safety point that applies to every cold chisel applies here too. The struck end is softer than the cutting edge by design, and it spreads into a mushroom with thin curled edges over time. Those curls are brittle and break away under a hammer blow at high speed — a recognised cause of eye injury. Grind the head back to a clean chamfer as soon as it starts, and wear eye protection every time regardless. Sharpen the edge with frequent cooling so you do not draw the temper.
