Installation Mallet (36mm)

A bigger face spreads the blow over more area. That is precisely what you want when the thing you are striking is large, flat or fragile: a full-width tapping block along a floorboard edge, a paving slab being bedded down, a large panel being seated, a big component being driven home. A small face concentrates the same blow into a small spot, and on a wide workpiece that means a series of local dents and an uneven result rather than an even movement. It is the same principle as using a caul under a clamp — spread the load and the work moves as one piece.

The head is PVC, which is the specification that defines the tool. It is hard enough to move things decisively and soft enough to deform against the work rather than denting it, so it belongs to every job where a mark would matter. That is not a soft option: a steel hammer on a machined surface bruises a sealing face into leaking, on a bearing seat leaves a high spot that runs rough, and on a finished laminate edge leaves a mark that is there for good. The mallet is the correct tool, not the gentle one.

The work: laying and closing up laminate and engineered flooring, bedding pavers and slabs, seating tiles, assembling joinery and furniture, closing mitres and tapping tenons home, fitting kitchen and wardrobe carcases together, seating machinery components and interference fits, and fitting trim and panels.

The handle is fibreglass, which is right for a tool carried in a bag and used on the ground: it will not shrink loose in the eye as the weather changes, it will not rot if it is left in the wet, and it absorbs a useful share of the shock.

Two practical points. PVC stiffens in cold conditions and is more likely to mark work when the mallet is cold, so a few blows on scrap to warm it is worth the ten seconds. And inspect the face — once it has split or lost a piece, the remaining edge concentrates the blow and the mallet begins damaging exactly the surfaces it was bought to protect, at which point it should be replaced rather than persevered with.
