The British pattern claw hammer is specified here by its face diameter — 27mm — rather than by head weight, and that is a clue to what matters about it. Face size is what you are aiming with, and 27mm is a generous face: easier to land squarely on a nail head, more forgiving of a slightly off swing, and less likely to glance and leave a half-moon dent in the timber. For anybody who nails all day, a larger face means fewer bent nails and fewer marks to fill.

The British pattern itself is a traditional shape, characterised by a fairly deep, strongly curved claw and a robust head. The curved claw is what gives it its leverage: as you pull back on the handle, the curve rolls against the timber and lifts the nail progressively rather than in one heave, which draws long nails out without snapping their heads off.

Fully ground face is on the specification, and it is a meaningful line. Grinding the face flat and true after forging means it strikes square. A face left as forged carries the texture and slight irregularity of the forging die, and any hammer face that is not truly flat tends to slide off the nail head under load — which is exactly what bends nails and marks the work.

The head is forged fine grain steel hardened to more than HRC 48. That hardness is deliberately restrained and it is a safety matter, not a saving. Hardened much further, a face turns brittle and chips instead of denting — most likely when it catches the edge of a hardened nail or lands at an angle. Chips leave a hammer face fast enough to blind, and it is one of the recognised serious injuries on any site. Just above 48 gives a face that resists denting and mushrooming through years of use while remaining tough enough to deform rather than break. Forging is what lets the curved claw take heavy levering without cracking, since the grain follows the curve instead of running across it.

The handle is a two-colour fibreglass shaft with a moulded cushion grip: no shrinking loose in changing weather, no rot when it is left out, real shock absorption, and a grip that holds in a sweaty or wet hand.
