A fibreglass shaft cannot shrink. That is its central advantage and it addresses the failure that timber handles genuinely suffer from: wood takes up and gives off moisture with the weather, and a handle that has dried out loosens in the eye of the head. A loose head on a masonry hammer at this weight is not a small problem — it is a head leaving the handle mid-swing. Fibreglass simply does not do it, so the tool that was tight when you bought it is tight in three years. It will not rot if it is left out in the rain, it does not suffer for being stored in a damp site box, and it will not be eaten by anything.

It also damps vibration well. The fibres flex slightly and absorb a share of the shock that would otherwise travel into your wrist and elbow, and on masonry work — where every blow lands on something hard and unyielding — that adds up over a day. The two-colour shaft carries a moulded cushion grip, which is what keeps the hammer from twisting in a hand that is wet, dusty or sweaty.

The honest trade against timber is that a fibreglass handle cannot be re-hung. When it is damaged, the tool is finished, whereas a mason who breaks an oak handle fits a new one and keeps a head he has grown used to. Which matters more is a genuine question of preference and of how the tool is stored.

The head is forged fine grain steel, hardened to over HRC 48, with a matt black painted finish. That hardness is deliberately moderate for safety: a face hardened much beyond it becomes brittle and chips rather than dents, and fragments off a hammer face travel fast enough to blind. Just above 48 resists mushrooming for years while staying tough enough to deform if a blow lands at an angle, which on stone is routine.

At 1500g this is the general-purpose weight — heavy enough to split and break block confidently, light enough to swing accurately all day.
