A wider edge removes more metal in a pass and holds its line better on a longer cut. Where the 6mm chisel is for precise, confined, one-spot work, this one suits cuts that need to travel: cutting a longer slot, shearing a line across a plate, trimming a weld or a casting along its length, cutting through a larger rivet or a bigger seized nut, and dressing metal at a bench where the surface being cut is more than a few millimetres across. The slightly greater length and thicker body follow the width for a reason — a wider edge needs more force behind it, and a thicker body stops the chisel flexing under that force.

The material is chrome vanadium steel heat treated to HRC 52 to 58, and this is a better specification than the plain carbon steel used on the larger builders' chisels in this range. Chrome vanadium is the alloy behind good spanners and sockets: chromium and vanadium together raise hardness, wear resistance and toughness rather than trading one against another. At 52 to 58 Rockwell C the cutting edge is genuinely hard — hard enough to cut steel repeatedly without rolling over — which is exactly what a metalworking chisel needs and considerably harder than a masonry chisel requires.

That hardness applies to the cutting end only. The struck end of any cold chisel is deliberately left softer so it can absorb hammer blows without shattering, and the consequence is that it gradually spreads into a mushroom with thin edges curling over the sides. Those curled edges are brittle, and sooner or later a hammer blow breaks one off and flings it at high speed. It is a well-documented cause of eye injuries and of steel splinters embedded in hands and forearms. Dressing the head back to a clean chamfer on a grinder takes a minute and should be done as soon as the curl appears, not when someone gets hurt.

Some technique. Match the hammer to the chisel — a heavy hammer on a small chisel overshoots and is hard to place. Work at a shallow angle so the edge cuts and lifts the chip rather than burying itself. Sharpen with a file, or on a grinder with frequent dips in water, since letting the edge get hot draws the temper out and leaves you with a soft chisel that will never hold an edge again.
