Nine hundred and ten grams — two pounds — is the heavy ball pein, and it exists for the jobs where the lighter hammers simply are not delivering enough. Driving large cold chisels through thick steel, setting big rivets, driving heavy drifts and pins, breaking rusted assemblies apart, straightening and dressing heavy section: these need mass behind the blow, and a light hammer used harder is not a substitute for a heavy one used properly.

The physics is worth stating because it explains why buying a heavier hammer is sometimes the right answer rather than a lazy one. The energy in a blow comes from mass and speed together, and a heavier head at the same swing speed simply arrives with more. Beyond that, a heavy head decelerates less when it meets resistance, so more of its energy goes into the work rather than being bounced back. Trying to do a two pound job with a one pound hammer means many more blows, and every extra blow is another chance to hit the chisel at an angle and send it flying.

The ball end serves the same purpose as on the lighter hammers, scaled up: peening and spreading metal, setting large rivets, closing pin ends and dressing heavy burrs, all with a rounded surface that will not cut an edge into the work.

Fully ground face and cheeks means the head is machined true after forging — flat where it strikes so it lands square, and dressed on the sides so the head is dimensionally accurate and properly balanced on the shaft. On a two pound head, balance is something you feel in every swing.

The head is forged fine grain steel hardened above HRC 48. That figure is deliberately moderate and it is a safety limit, not an economy. Harder faces are brittle faces, and brittle faces chip rather than dent when a blow lands wrong. The heavier the hammer, the more energy is behind any fragment that comes off it, and hammer-face chips are a documented cause of blinding injuries. Just over 48 resists mushrooming for years and still deforms rather than fractures.

The handle is a two-colour fibreglass shaft with a moulded cushion grip — dimensionally stable in any humidity, rot-proof, and absorbing a genuine share of the shock a two pound blow returns up the shaft.
