Six hundred and eighty grams — a pound and a half — is the middle ball pein and, for most workshops, the one that gets picked up without thinking about it. It has enough mass to drive a cold chisel through steel, set a substantial rivet, drive a drift or a punch properly and persuade a stubborn component, while still being controllable enough for accurate work at a bench. If a workshop owns one ball pein, this is usually the weight.

The ball end is what distinguishes this pattern from a plain hammer, and it does a specific job. Peening is working metal by striking it so it flows and spreads rather than simply moves, and a rounded striking surface is what makes that possible without leaving hard edge marks. Rivets are set with it, pin ends are closed over with it, burrs are dressed down with it, and shapes are started in sheet with it. The flat face handles everything else.

Fully ground face and cheeks is the quality indicator on the specification. A ground face is machined flat and true after forging, so it strikes square instead of transferring a forged texture into the work. Ground cheeks — the sides of the head — indicate the head has been dressed all over rather than only where it hits, which gives it clean edges, accurate dimensions and proper balance on the shaft. It is the kind of detail that separates a hammer that feels right in the hand from one that does not.

The head is forged fine grain steel hardened to more than HRC 48. That hardness is set deliberately below what the steel could take, and the reason is safety. A very hard face is a brittle face, and brittle faces chip instead of denting when a blow lands at an angle or lands on something it should not. Fragments leaving a hammer face travel fast enough to cause permanent eye injury. Just above 48 keeps the face resistant to denting and mushrooming through years of work while leaving it tough enough to deform rather than break.

The handle is a two-colour fibreglass shaft with a moulded cushion grip: no shrinkage in changing humidity, no rot, good shock absorption, and a grip that will not twist in an oily hand.
