Two kilograms on a fibreglass shaft is the heaviest stoning hammer in the range, and it is the combination that suits site work best. Heavy masonry hammers live hard lives — left in the rain, thrown in a truck, stored in a damp site box, used for months on end — and that is precisely the environment in which a timber handle gives trouble and a synthetic one does not.

The reason comes down to moisture. Wood absorbs and releases it with the weather, and a handle that has dried loosens in the eye of the head. At two kilograms a loosening head is a serious hazard rather than an inconvenience: there is a great deal of energy in that mass, and a head that comes off mid-swing travels a long way. Fibreglass has no moisture content to lose, so a hammer that was tight when it was bought stays tight, regardless of how it has been stored. It does not rot, does not split from drying, and does not care about being left out.

The second benefit is vibration. Two kilograms landing on stone sends a substantial shock back up the shaft, and fibreglass flexes slightly and absorbs a meaningful share of it before it reaches your wrist and elbow. Over a day of heavy breaking that is the difference between finishing comfortably and finishing sore. The two-colour shaft carries a moulded cushion grip, which stops the hammer twisting in a hand that is dusty, wet or sweaty — and control matters more the heavier the head.

The honest limitation is that a fibreglass handle cannot be re-hung. When it is damaged the tool is done, where a broken oak handle can be replaced and a favourite head kept. That is the trade, and for site work most people take it.

The head is forged fine grain steel hardened to above HRC 48, matt black painted. That figure is deliberately restrained and is a safety specification: harder faces turn brittle and chip rather than dent, and fragments leaving a hammer face travel fast enough to blind. Just over 48 resists mushrooming through years of use while staying tough enough to deform when a blow lands at an angle, which on rough stone is normal rather than exceptional.

Two things to watch. Overstrike — missing the work and landing the shaft on it — is what kills fibreglass handles, so check the shaft just below the head for splitting or fraying and retire it if you find any.
