Eight ounces is the light rubber mallet, and it is the one for work where you want to move something without any risk of damaging it at all. Rubber is softer than the PVC of an installation mallet and softer again than any metal, so it deforms substantially on impact and spreads the blow over time as well as area. That makes it the gentlest striking tool in a normal toolkit.

At 225 grams the head has little mass, which is the point. This is not a mallet for driving anything home hard; it is for tapping, seating, aligning and persuading. Bedding a small tile true. Seating a trim or a cover. Tapping a component into alignment. Closing a light assembly. Working sheet metal over a form without stretching or marking it. Fitting hub caps, badges and clips on vehicles. Any job where a heavier blow would move things too far or leave a mark.

The black rubber head is the whole specification and it earns its place in two ways. It will not mark, dent or scratch — which matters on painted, plated, polished, plastic and finished surfaces where a steel hammer would leave permanent damage. And it grips slightly as it lands rather than sliding, so a blow at a slight angle still moves the workpiece where you aimed it instead of glancing off.

One honest note about rubber: it bounces. A rubber mallet returns a good share of the blow's energy back up the handle as rebound, which is exactly what you want when tapping something delicately into position and exactly what you do not want when you are trying to deliver serious force. If your problem is a component that will not move, a rubber mallet is the wrong tool and a dead blow mallet — which is filled with steel shot specifically to kill rebound — is the right one.

The handle is a two-colour fibreglass shaft with an ergonomic cushion grip. Fibreglass will not shrink out of the head in changing humidity and will not rot, and the cushion grip keeps the mallet controlled in a hand that is wet or oily.
