A kilogram is the working machinist hammer, and the extra weight over the 500g version changes what it can do rather than simply making it harder work. Energy in a hammer blow comes from mass and speed together, so doubling the head roughly doubles what arrives at the work for the same swing. That is what you want when you are driving a substantial cold chisel through steel, breaking a seized joint apart, driving a heavy drift, straightening bar and section, setting large rivets, or persuading a machine component off a shaft.

The head is forged fine grain steel, hardened and tempered to HRC greater than 48, and that number is worth reading properly because it is often misunderstood as a low figure. A hammer face is deliberately not taken to maximum hardness. Steel of this type could be hardened past 58, but a face that hard is brittle, and a brittle face chips when it is overloaded or when it lands a glancing blow. Chips leave a hammer face at high speed and hammer-face fragments are a well-documented cause of eye injury. At around 48 Rockwell C the face resists denting and mushrooming for years while remaining tough enough to deform instead of fracturing. Getting that balance right is the difference between a good hammer and a dangerous one.

The forging itself matters as much as the heat treatment. Forging flows the grain of the steel around the shape of the head rather than cutting through it, which is why a forged head absorbs thousands of shocks without cracking.

The handle is a two-colour fibreglass shaft with a moulded cushion grip. On a kilogram head that choice earns its keep twice over: fibreglass will not shrink out of the eye in changing humidity, will not rot, and damps a noticeable share of the shock that a solid handle sends into your wrist and elbow. Anybody who has spent a morning with a heavy hammer knows how much that matters by the afternoon. The cushion grip resists twisting in an oily hand.

The head carries a matt black powder painted finish, which keeps a forged head from rusting in a damp store.
