The shape is what makes it work. Rather than a flat face, a chipping hammer carries a narrow chisel edge at one end and a point at the other. The chisel edge slides under a layer of slag, scale or rust and lifts it off in sheets, working along a seam. The point concentrates the whole blow into a tiny area to break through hard, thick or stubborn deposits and to get into pits and corners the chisel end cannot reach. Between them they clear a surface far faster than any brush and without the abrasive removal of metal that a grinder brings.

Why that matters on welding is worth being clear about. Slag is the crust left by the flux, and it must come off completely before the next run is laid down or before inspection. Slag trapped under a subsequent weld run is an inclusion — a void in the joint that is invisible from outside and is exactly where a weld cracks under load. Chipping between runs is not tidying up; it is part of making a sound weld.

On pipework and structural steel the same tool takes off rust scale and mill scale before painting or coating. Paint applied over loose scale lifts within a season, taking the protection with it and leaving the steel worse off than before, so surface preparation is most of what determines how long a coating lasts.

The head is forged fine steel at 500 grams, which is the useful weight for this work: enough to break scale loose with a flick of the wrist, light enough to use continuously along a long seam without wearing your forearm out.

Two safety points that are not formalities. Slag comes off hot and sharp and it flies — eye protection is essential, and a face shield is better, because chipping directs fragments back towards you rather than away. And let a weld cool before chipping it hard; hot slag is more likely to spit, and a weld disturbed while it is still soft can be damaged.
