About Safety Equipment & Insulated Tools in Sri Lanka

This is the smallest category on the site and the one with the highest stakes. It covers safety goggles including flip designs, face shields, ear muffs, full safety harnesses with energy-absorber lanyards, and a range of insulated hand tools — insulated combination, long nose, diagonal cutting and water pump pliers, insulated wire scissors, insulated screwdriver sets and complete insulated tool kits.

Insulated tools deserve a proper explanation, because they are widely misunderstood. A tool with a plastic-coated handle is not the same thing as an insulated tool. Properly insulated tools are built and tested to withstand mains voltage through the entire handle assembly, so that if the metal part contacts a live conductor, the current does not reach your hand. Anyone who works on circuits that may be live — electricians, panel builders, solar installers, maintenance electricians — should be using tools built for it rather than ordinary tools with a rubber grip. Inspect them before use and retire any with a nick, cut or crack in the insulation; a damaged insulated tool offers a false sense of protection, which is worse than none.

Eye protection is the cheapest insurance in any workshop. Grinding, chiselling, drilling overhead and cutting steel all throw fragments at speed, and eyes do not heal the way skin does. Goggles seal around the eye for dust and fine particles; a face shield covers the whole face for grinding and cutting where larger debris flies. Many people wear both.

Ear muffs matter more than people credit. Hearing damage from angle grinders, hammer drills and impact wrenches is gradual and permanent — you do not notice it happening, and there is no treatment afterwards.

A harness with an energy-absorber lanyard is for work at height, and the absorber is the part that matters: it slows a fall over a distance rather than stopping it instantly, which is what prevents the arrest itself causing injury. Check the anchor point is rated before trusting anything to it.
