Energy Absorber Lanyard (double hooks, 1.95M)

The lanyard is 1.95m of 14mm kernmantle rope with a forged steel karabiner at each end and, critically, an energy absorber built in. That absorber is the part that matters. A fall arrested by rope alone stops the body almost instantly, and the forces involved cause severe internal injury even though the rope held. An energy absorber tears progressively under load, stretching the stopping distance over a longer period and cutting the peak force on the body to a survivable level. A lanyard without one is not fall-arrest equipment.

The breaking load is 22kN. The double hooks let you stay attached continuously while moving between anchor points — clip the second hook to the next anchor before releasing the first, so you are never unprotected during the transition, which is when a great many falls happen.

The stated working height of more than 6 metres is not a suggestion, and it is the specification most often misunderstood. It is fall clearance: the room needed below your anchor for the lanyard length, the absorber's deployment as it tears, your own body length and a safety margin. Below that height a fall can leave you hitting the ground or a lower level before the system has finished arresting it — the equipment works perfectly and you are still badly hurt. If you cannot guarantee the clearance, this is the wrong equipment and you need a short restraint system or an inertia reel instead.

Three more things that matter. Anchor above you wherever possible: anchoring below your D-ring increases the distance you fall before the system loads. Retire any lanyard that has arrested a fall, even if it looks perfect — the absorber has done its single job. And have a rescue plan, because a person hanging in a harness must be recovered quickly; suspension trauma can be fatal within a short time even though the fall was survived.
